FREEBIE: Back to Square 1-4-5 (Scientific Knowledge and a Double Square Puzzle)
Start the Science class with one (1) square. It's simple, because one square is unambiguous. But then challenge students to take four (4) polygons and arrange them together to make a square shape. A-ha! That's trickier. Like Science, there can be many hypothesis on how they fit together, but the best solution solves the puzzle. Seed Germination Lab- CER

Classroom Scavenger Hunt
I used this scavenger hunt as a centers activity for the first week of school. The students enjoyed getting to explore the room by themselves and I felt it was an easy way for them to get to know each other and their environment quickly. As a science teacher it was particularly useful to instructing the students on expectations for groupwork and safety elements around the room. You could easily draw & photocopy or create a class outline to replace the one I've made for my classroom.

Organize Your High School Science Classroom and Laboratory
Set your expectations for your class during the first days of schools. High school students respond well to structure and organization. Use their skills and willingness to cooperate. Think about what needs to be done and give everyone a job to do no matter how small. Keep your list of class assignments handy and call on your monitors regularly to make your classroom and lab activities hum.
