PreviewMacromolecule Lab - "Science Fair Tragedy: a macromolecule investigation"

The goal of this lab is to engage students in hands-on exploration and identification of macromolecules (proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, nucleic acids) while integrating crosscutting concepts and science and engineering practices from the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). This lab a long one, perfect for a 90 min block day. The lesson includes a lesson plan and a protocol for the teacher doing the set-up before the lab- trust me, this makes your life so much easier. I remember spending

Stereo & Compound Microscope Print Out

Assure students know the difference between compound and stereo microscopes before getting them off the shelf! This FREE Illustration of Stereo and Compound microscopes scaffolds research on the anatomy of microscopes. In the past, I used a microscope in class to show students the structures while they took notes on this printout. We've also had them conduct independent research or watch videos. Helpful nonetheless! Quiz on STEREO Scopes and COMPOUND Microscopes to be used after the lecture, res

This image is a great resource for all my students who need a reminder on what tools we will be using during dissections and also a great organizational guide to help students organize dissection tools after their lab. I printed and laminated them so each station would have two. This is a great scaffold for my ELL students.

Home made Root Viewer

My kids wanted to know how root veggies grow and I wanted a well-priced option. Use a three liter soda bottle and a recycled bottom for a drain cup. I also used a piece of scrap fabric because roots don't like the sun, they will die. I suggest using sticky hook n loop to hold the fabric on. The fabric can be removed to reveal the roots then placed back to protect them. I also planted a pinto bean to show how other plants grow up. The whole project cost under $4. Please contact with any questions

Annotated Amoeba

The image is from a prepared slide of Amoeba proteus, which has been stained pink. The amoeba has been magnified 400X. Pertinent structures are labeled. The beauty of this image, as well as the others I've uploaded, is that it shows what students will see when looking through their own compound light microscopes. Rather than trying to connect an edited, color-corrected, (super) high-definition image from the internet to what students are seeing in their own scopes, you can give them a far more

This is a molecular model generated at home using UCSF Chimera that is helpful in showing chemistry and biochemistry student how an amino acid sequence folds into a 3D structure. In this image, the amino acid sequence is shown at the top right. The N-terminus and C-terminus of the sequence are labeled. Do you need molecular structure like this for your classes? Just let me know and it's yours!
