Test My Genes Lab: Students Use Their Traits to Practice Punnett Squares - NGSS

Created by
Next Gen Sci Guy
In Brief: The lab proceeds as follows1. Students complete a short matching section using important genetics terms2. Students read about five different human traits (Interlacing of fingers, PTC tasting, Presence of Palmaris Longus Muscle, Hair Texture, and Color Vision)3. Students attempt to determine their genotpyes, based upon their phenotypes, and the information in the lab.4. Students perform Punnett Squares using their genotypes, in order to make predictions about future generationsA. NEXT

Scientific Measurement Activities - Mini Metric Olympics

The mini-metric Olympics is an awesome, silly, engaging activity to help students build scientific tool and measurement skills. Students compete in teams to do different measurement activities! They perform the following: 1. The Cotton Ball Shot Put 2. A Javelin Straw Throw 3. A Marble Grab (for measuring mass) 4. Footing it with the best (for measuring a footprint on graph paper) 5. Paper Plate Discus 6. Sponge Squeeze (measure the amount of water) This is a great beginning of the year acti

Gravity Lab: Proving Acceleration due to Gravity is 9.8m/s^2

In this hands on, interactive lab the students will be attempting to prove that the acceleration due to gravity on earth is 9.8m/s^2. Everything you need for the lab is here except for some of the hands on materials. My kids love this lab every year and I usually give a treat or extra credit to the lab group that can get closest to expected outcome. The lab also helps prove to the students that mass doesn't matter, and all objects will fall to the earth at the same rate (when removing air resis

Convex and Concave Lenses Activity

Created by
Science It Up
The lab activity requires the use of concave and convex lenses. I use simple small ones that are cheap and easy to buy. In addition, you need to have a small object (penny, pair of dice, etc) and a large object (cabinet, door, tv, etc) for students to examine. They will stay at their desks and use the concave and convex lenses to look at each item (once holding the lens close and once holding it at arm's length). Students will write their observations on the chart provided. Then, students will a

BIOLOGY 1st DAY ICEBREAKER LAB: Is It Alive?

A fun and engaging introductory lab that gives students a hands-on activity on day one. Students have to answer the deceptively simple question 'Is It Alive?' based on whether or not each specimen checks off all the boxes required to be considered such. Flexible and engaging, you can pick your own specimens or go with the tried-and-true set of suggestions in the lab. Put the syllabus and rules aside.....there will be time for that....let your students decide if that chicken egg is actually al

Newton 1st law of motion lab activity stations

Created by
Nicole Bailey
This is a 3 page lab sheet that includes 4 activities. The students would do these at stations set up by the teacher prior to the activity. During a class period (possibly two class periods), they would go to the stations and complete the activity and answer the questions associated with each. This is a great inquiry lab that gets the students thinking about newton's 1 law. Once students have completed it, I would do a discussion about the results and how each one pertained to newton's 1st l

Qualitative vs. Quantitative Data Lab

For this lab students will pick 4 objects from around the room and collect 3 qualitative and 3 quantities observations on it. They will need to make sure their qualitative observations involves looking at the quality of the object and use their senses and their quantitative observations should use numbers and involved some type of measurement of the object such as length, width, mass or volume. This lab has everything you need except for the objects. You can have the students pick their own ra

This is an amazing lab in which students study the characteristics of different types of pasta and create their own taxonomical key. Objective: The purpose of this lab is to better understand how living organisms are classified. Instructions: You are to construct an identification key and a dichotomous key for “The Kingdom of Pasta.” Read the background information then follow the procedures that follow. Background: Classification is the process of grouping objects or information based o

Accuracy vs. Precision Lab

*** All you need is a penny and a copy of this sheet for each student *** Students practice identifying scenarios as accurate and/or/nor precise by repeatedly dropping pennies onto a target. Very easy to conduct and many possible extensions can be done with it- vary the height, change the person dropping the penny, etc. Who was most accurate? Who was most precise? Who was both? Who was neither? Create a classroom discussion of student results and attempt to identify how/why some students

I love this lab!! It covers just about everything that a 7th grader from California needs to know about light. This is a five page lab that usually takes 2-3 days to complete. You may have to change some information, such as page numbers, or diagrams to match your textbook and what you teach, but it will give you a great place to start! Enjoy! This activity supports Grade Seven California State Science Standard 6 - Physical principles underlie biological structures and functions.

Next Generation Science Lab: How Gross is your Phone? A Bacteria Lab

NGSS Claim and Reasoning lab where students design and culture bacteria found on their phone. This is an open ended inquiry lab. Students are given a list of materials and asked to come up with their own procedures to support a claim. This lab goes with a unit over Bacteria and Viruses. I use this lab as a replacement for the recipe lab of growing bacteria. Since students are designing a test, and using their own property, it makes the learning all that more relevant! I use this lab i

Creating a Conservation of Momentum Problem

In this lab projects students will make their own Conservation of Momentum Problem and prove it through math and draw it on a poster. This project helps them better understand how Momentum MUST be conserved throughout the problem as they research and create their own real life situation. My students love doing this one each and every year. It gives them the chance to look up their own information and draw conclusion from their own problem. This can work with any grade level. All you need to d

STATIC ELECTRICITY MAGIC LAB

Kids love to play with static electricity. This lab tells and shows them how it works. You don't have to be a science teacher to use this project to teach static. It introduces friction, charges, and the Law of Magnetism. Experimenting with static, using plastic, balloons, fur and rubber rod, and a Van de Graaff generator provide much excitement and learning. Do it individually, in small groups, or as a class lab. Project it and use class discussion and explanation. Kids will love it.

Blood Spatter Detectives Lab

This fun and exciting lab allows students to work in teams of 3 or 4 to determine how changing the distance effects how a drop of blood falls. This lab provides practice with identifying variables and graphing as well as an interesting introduction to forensics. You will notice a rubber stamp icon on the lab sheet. My students know that this means that they must receive a rubber stamp of approval of their hypothesis from me before I will let them proceed with gathering their materials. I play ho

Natural Selection in Goldfish - Scientific Method lab

This is a really fun and easy to do lab that is a great way to start off the year or to review the fundamentals of the scientific method. Students are given a problem, have to develop a hypothesis regarding the natural selection of gold fish. (the edible kind). They have to collect the data, graph the data (which the graph is included) and analyze the data with questions regarding natural selection. The kids always have fun with this lab!
