Blood Spatter Detectives Lab

This fun and exciting lab allows students to work in teams of 3 or 4 to determine how changing the distance effects how a drop of blood falls. This lab provides practice with identifying variables and graphing as well as an interesting introduction to forensics. You will notice a rubber stamp icon on the lab sheet. My students know that this means that they must receive a rubber stamp of approval of their hypothesis from me before I will let them proceed with gathering their materials. I play horror music soundtracks (Halloween, Friday the 13th, etc.) during this lab for added suspense and motivation, criss-cross the class room with Crime Scene tape (obtained from our local police officer) and create the Mystery Blood Splatters by printing them out from Google images and laminating them.

The ingredients for making the fake blood are regular household kitchen items: equal parts warm water and corn syrup, red food coloring and cocoa powder added at your discretion until it looks realistic. Looks great, easy, safe & edible too!
