Digging for Fossils Lab Earth Science
In this lab you use a chocolate chip cookie as a representation of how archeologists/paleontologists excavate sites. Have your students engage in an exciting lab where they dissect a chocolate chip cookie using forceps (tweezers), q-tips, tooth picks, water, paper towels, and cotton balls.

This is a simple fill in chart for students as they are observing different rocks and minerals. I just started the 4th grade unit on Rocks and there are just so many possibilities.
Here they observe five different rocks with hand lenses and write in what they observe about each rock. On the second page, they can draw a picture of each rock and give a brief explanation of the differences and similarities.

Fossil Find Task Cards 3rd Grade Science
Lab Overview – The students will move from task to task to complete the fossil lab.
Materials– Plaster a Paris/wall compound, Vaseline, plastic knife, and random items to make own fossils (ex. Leaves, hair bows etc.). Samples of real fossils; pictures will work.
Suggestions: Coat items with Vaseline before pressing them into the plaster. They will be easier to pry out with plastic knife after drying.

Mineral Study Journal
This is a journal for students to record their observations when studying the properties of 12 different minerals. The students will test the mineral's color, texture, luster, hardness, magnetism, acidic, and other mineral properties. There is also a place at the bottom of each journal page for students to write their observations in paragraph form. This Mineral Journal correlates with South Carolina's mineral standards and could easily be adapted for other state's standards.
