Middle School First Day of School Activity (Math)

I use this first day of school activity to get to know the students and get them started with mathmatical thinking on our first day together. The students complete the worksheet, adding up all the numbers at the end, then as a class we order the totals and assign special names to each student based on their order. It isn't age specific, but I find that my Middle School students were very engaged by the process.

Well, That's Life is a game I made that attempts to capture the true anxiety of heading into payday. The cards that students draw are silly but realistic scenarios that they are absolutely going to be faced with once they start earning a paycheck. This document is what the student needs to play the game. It has a check register and a set of instructions for the students to hold on to. The object is that after ten rounds, students want to have a positive balance in their register. There are cards
