School Dress Code: An Evidence-Based Argumentative Writing Unit - Google Drive
This argumentative writing unit focuses on utilizing a popular and controversial topic, school dress codes, to spark informal dialogue and debate as well as claim/counterclaim development and evidence-based writing through article and video study. Examining students’ school dress code experiences, students are given many opportunities throughout this unit to discuss their positions with peers. These conversations and informal writings combined with an analysis of the differing viewpoints present

This activity includes the use of 7 primary source texts (speech excerpts, photographs, and comic strip) to engage students and encourage them to interact with text and cite specific evidence. Each document comes with at least 3 questions. The questions build upon each other to help students see both sides of the issue with McCarthyism during America's Cold War Era. At the end, students will take the information they have gained while analyzing the documents and construct an argumentative essay.

Is the US a Democracy or a Republic?
Students will look at sources to help them determine what type of a government they think the US really has. (I share with students my opinion, but ask them to determine this on their own).
This activity asks students to analyze short primary sources, explain their analysis and compare and contrast the characteristics of a democracy and a republic- All in one! If your students haven't been introduced to a DBQ yet, but need the practice, this will help prepare them for the many skills involved
