This is a final weather project that will give students the opportunity to demonstrate a deep understanding of weather concepts, analyzing multiple perspectives and excellence in persuasive writing. The project is interdisciplinary in that it meets fifth grade reading, writing, and science common core standards. The Declaration of Independence is really a "Dear John" letter
In this lesson, students will read a "Dear John" in which Mary lists the reasons that she needs to break up with John. Using a graphic organizer, the students will analyze the various parts of the letter.
Students will then look at the preamble to the Declaration of Independence. Usually a similar graphic organizer they will analyze the various parts of the preamble to deepen their understanding of why the colonies felt they needed to "break up" with England.
