The project is interdisciplinary in that it meets fifth grade reading, writing, and science common core standards. In this lesson, students will read a "Dear John" in which Mary lists the reasons that she needs to break up with John. Using a graphic organizer, the students will analyze the various parts of the letter. Students will then look at the preamble to the Declaration of Independence. Usually a similar graphic organizer they will analyze the various parts of the preamble to deepen their understanding of why the colonies felt they needed to "break up" with England.
