Ice Breaker: Human Scavenger Hunt

This is a great ice breaker to use with middle or high school students. I set it up like a challenge for the students. The first person to get each box filled in has the opportunity to win.. IF they can identify each person in the room based on their answers! If the winner can successfully identify all students from their board, then we have a winner. If not.. we continue the game. You can always find me in the midst of the activity- it's a great way to build relationships.

The Medicine Wheel is a symbol that has been used for millennia by Indigenous groups in Canada and the United States. It is a sacred symbol for many things that occur in groups of four - the four sacred medicines (sage, cedar, tobacco, and sweetgrass), the four phases of life (infant, child/teenager, adult, elder) and the four parts of a person (physical, spiritual, mental and emotional). This activity briefly introduces the medicine wheel and students use the wheel to set goals in a holistic wa

Let's Be Honest Ice Breaker Worksheet

ICEBREAKER ACTIVITYThis worksheet is an activity I do at the beginning of every year with my highschoolers students. It allows for a time of self-reflection and let's me see how they think about themselves and the world around them. Most importantly, I ask important questions at the end as a survey about my upcoming class, which is English. I take this information to start to get to know them quicker and understand how they would like to learn before we even really begin doing anything.

This resource is designed as a quick get-to-know-you and introduction to potential topics in a Social Studies class. I love doing a content-based four corners because so many students aren't comfortable sharing about themselves (or they are sick of doing so during the first days of school). A teacher who uses this should be able to explain some of the basic ideas before the students pick a corner. Note: I always underscore the significance of each choice: they aren't fun dances with no meaning,

Mapping Identities

Mapping Identities is an activity to better get to know your students at the beginning of the year. It's meant for students to explore what makes them who they are or at least the parts on their minds that they want to think about and share right now. These are living tools that will be useful throughout the year to help students consider how their identities intersect with the curriculum. Because of this, you'll want to ensure that students can access their individual maps easily: have students

They can then use the template (page 2) to draw a picture of what they would look like with that career. Use this to get to know your students and refer to it throughout the year.
