All educators want their students to apply what they have learned and be successful in life. The only way I have found through the years to make this happen is to “Know your Kids.” Students who are likely to fail in school or life can be due to many factors. Poverty, cultural differences, mobility, parental unemployment, fatigue, are a few reasons students may not perform to their potential. Develop a warm caring relationship with your students. Tap into what makes since in your students’ world while teaching the STATE STANDARDS. Differentiated instruction and documentation are a must.

Jack be nimble, Jack be quick, Jack jumped over the candle stick! (Mother Goose) break the rhyme down it becomes a pretty complicated group of words. The sound j in English is h in Spanish, the verb tense is incorrect, and what is a nimble? “ELPS?” Isn’t that something you quietly say under your breath when you realize your lesson plans by law (in Texas anyway) have to have them listed? SIOP? That is a Dr. Seuss critter, right? Help! This kid can’t speak English and they are a not coded (LEP) Limited English Proficient! I want to take my kiddo to RTI are they SPED… or is it language? How can I document? As a random abstract thinker, documentation and consistency are not my strengths. Being an English language support teacher at multiple campuses for three years changed me. I had to whip myself into a data girl. I found principals, colleges and yes, even the compliance officer praising my “forms.” I thought I would share my journey.
