This lesson tells how, step-by-step with screen shots, arrows, and words to tell the student how to create the database. Maybe you've played the game whereby there are a group of "suspects" and you want to narrow down who the "bad guy" is by asking

These various things are done with pictures to start out since I think this can be taught at the elementary level and then it progresses to variables. Latter ones use (groups) and ones more latter use fractions or percentages of (groups).

"IF" statements can be real useful. Though I don't have it in this lesson, you can make it more interesting by having the student put student names, including theirs in the list instead of numbers. Let's say the student's name is "mary". Then the

This spreadsheet has the student make a simple budget, using formulas and the minimum wage as the "income". The point of using minimum wage is to (hopefully) show the student that one can't live much of a life if they only get a minimum wage job.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Two years ago, I retired after teaching algebra and computer applications to kids 7-12 grade. I even wrote a book (available at lulu.com with algebra lessons I used to make algebra MUCH EASIER if taught the correct way (I hate the textbooks I've seen and just used them as a reference as to which skills to make sure to cover).

MY TEACHING STYLE

I used handouts so kids could read the directions, look at the steps illustrated with pictures and arrows, and go at their own pace so the fast kids wouldn't get bored from waiting for the slow kids and the slow kids could read and reread the directions as many times as needed to do the assignments.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I have a Master's degree in Education, having done my work for it on creating computer programs to teach math.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I have (at least for now) a FREE web site with math games for Kindergarten to Algebra: www.conquestmath.com The games may be considered "old" for kids these days but I enjoyed playing them and they have pretty much all the skills for each of those grades.
