"History is important. If you don't know history it is as if you were born yesterday. And if you were born yesterday, anybody up there in a position of power can tell you anything, and you have no way of checking up on it.” ― Howard Zinn

MY TEACHING STYLE

It is the common approach for an instructor to say that understanding concepts and critical evaluation are key elements in the classroom; this is the most usual form of learning assessment for courses. While I share this perspective, my philosophy of teaching manifests me into a facilitator with the creation of an environment in which students partake in ownership within the classroom through the creation of a simulated world system. With this goal in mind, the question becomes how to create an environment where students will take ownership. I employ several means in my classroom to achieve this goal. One strategy is to enter every class with enthusiasm. I bring the love that I have for sociology and teaching into every lesson. I cannot expect my students to get enthusiastic about a class if I myself am not helping to facilitate a shared learning experience. In order for ownership to occur, students must feel some excitement towards the lecture and discipline and such ownership is never created standing behind a book.
