"When I look back, I am so impressed again with the life-giving power of literature. If I were a young person today, trying to gain a sense of myself in the world, I would do that again by reading, just as I did when I was young." - Maya Angelou

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am a ninth year high school ELA teacher working for a public school in the suburbs of Saint Louis, Missouri. Prior to moving to the STL area, I taught in a rural school district in the Missouri bootheel.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I always strive to be open and honest with my students. If something has to be done because it is required by the state or school, I tell them. I explain the reasons behind the decisions I make concerning their time in my classroom. I also attempt to incorporate opportunities for student voice and choice when possible. I try to help my students make real world connections to the literature that we read in class, because this is what will make my content memorable to them. I use humor and spend a lot of time establishing a good connection with my students at the beginning of each school year. I believe this is especially important when working with my at-risk or struggling students, which make up over half of my roster.
