As I'm not a teacher I've had to join TPT as a publisher - sounds very grand for what is really a cottage industry, just my husband and I working from home! We've been running Printable Heaven since 2008 and, since our bricks and mortar craft supplies company went under in 2012, this is our sole source of income. It's not easy making ends meet so I totally empathize with teachers who work really hard, as we do, for often disproportionate rewards. Printable Heaven started selling card-making downloads that I made myself using a graphics program. This always took some time and I'd only come up with something new to sell every month or so. In 2009 my father was going into a nursing home so my sisters and I were clearing out his place. Once of my sisters pulled a tatty book from a drawer and as it was an arty book and she knew that was my interest, she handed it to me. The book was full of poster art, much of it in colour and dated from the 60s, although the pictures inside were from the late 19th century. Some of them I wanted to use to decorate our newly decorated study but I really didn't want to break up the book, so I went and looked on the internet to see if I could find any of the same pictures to print. Somehow I stumbled into the world of public domain images from there, not even sure how....... The rest is history as they say! I started to use out of copyright pictures to make card-making items for Printable Heaven, then compiling discs of public domain pictures by theme for sale. I spend much of my time digging around old bookshops, charity (thrift) shops and using online resources to find gorgeous images. I love what I do, especially when it leads me to discover more about social history, and love delving into copyright law. I'd love to see the images I have collected being put to good use, and there is no better use than education. Teachers and educators are welcome to use the images on our public domain discs as part of their lessons. You are also welcome to take the images and make them into something else for sale on this site or elsewhere. We don't own the copyrights, these have expired - all we ask is that you don't take the images and use them in any way that is in competition to ourselves. Otherwise, have fun with them!
