"Stories are how we process the world, how we heal when we are broken, how we find freedom when its wrenched from us, how we make sense of trauma and joy, how we overcome and fight back, how we learn who we are." - Daniel Jose Older

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am a teacher, a librarian and a mom with a master's degree in elementary education, a certificate in special education, 15+ years in the classroom, 6 years of library experience and three children of my own.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I love inspiring enthusiasm, passion and creativity in my students and children. My background in special education ensures that my activities are well-planned and clearly explained so that the focus can be on building a reading culture, making meaning out of stories and learning and growing.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

The honors and awards that come with teaching are rarely bestowed with a plaque. They come in the form of collaborating with a teacher who doesn't usually like to work with others, or being the safe adult for a child in crisis. They come in overhearing spontaneous book discussions among students in the hallway, appreciative emails from parents and thank you cards at Christmastime. These are the honors and awards that wallpaper my office and in which I have the most pride.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I attended Princeton University for my undergraduate degree in history, Hunter College for my master's degree in elementary education with a certificate in special education and innumerable professional development sessions in technology, diversity, equity and inclusion and reading strategies and culture. Additionally, every day that I spend in the classroom is a learning opportunity and results in more practical skills than could be packed into another degree.
