I have taught Science and Math to different audiences in different learning environments for three decades. Whether teaching to Middle School and High School students in public school or as an Outdoor Environmental Educator at the Pueblo Mountain Park, my goal has always been to connect children with nature so that one day they will come to value it and be motivated to protect it. As the Curriculum Specialist and Virtual Program Coordinator at the Pueblo Zoo, I am excited to bring our conservation message to a wider audience through our online programs.
We use the 5E Model of Instruction for our Pueblo Zoo Conservation Programs. In general, we ENGAGE student interest with a pre-recorded Virtual Field Trip to one of our animal exhibits; we EXPLORE the topic with an outdoor activity; we EXPLAIN the lesson with an interactive Prezi presentation that is linked to student handouts; we ELABORATE on the topic by presenting one of our Education Animal Ambassadors; and, finally, we EVALUATE student learning with creative assessments that require students to use their new knowledge and skills to complete a novel challenge. We also provide resources to extend the learning with website recommendations, projects, and online ebooks.
