Alexandra McDowell, M.Ed. is a Generation Z educator with 3.5 years of experience as a K-5 math and reading tutor through the USD259 Native American Program (while earning a B.S. degree in Elementary Education) and then multiple years as a 5th grade classroom teacher (earning a M.Ed. during her first year of teaching). Mrs. McDowell's professional teaching career began during challenging times as her first year started during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the unprecedented circumstances, she demonstrated resilience and adaptability, quickly transitioning to remote teaching and supporting her students through the uncertainties of online learning during the day while also earning her Master's of Education in Teaching and Learning at night. Her district chose her to receive the WPS Distinguished Classroom Teacher Award during her first year of teaching and her State's Department of Education chose her to receive the KSDE Horizon Award during her second year of teaching. Her teaching success and positive relationships with her students were highlighted in news stories on NBC Nightly News and Inside Edition.
Mrs. McDowell's teaching style is characterized by an interactive and kinesthetic approach, inspired by her own experience as a kinesthetic learner and singer/songwriter and percussionist. She recognizes the importance of movement and hands-on experiences in facilitating students' engagement and understanding. Incorporating her passion for music, she creatively infuses rhythm and movement into her lessons, creating an energetic and immersive learning atmosphere. Throughout her teaching career, Mrs. McDowell's exceptional achievements have been recognized through prestigious accolades, such as the Kansas Department of Education Horizon Award and the Wichita Public Schools Distinguished Classroom Teacher Award. Her commitment to her students, her continuous professional development, and her innovative teaching style have positioned her as a remarkable educator dedicated to nurturing the academic growth and social-emotional well-being of her students.
