I have 7 years of experience teaching general music in elementary schools across Newark, Brooklyn, and New York City. During this time, I have developed and implemented engaging music curricula for online courses catering to elementary and middle school students. Additionally, I have served as a nonprofit administrator for a music nonprofit in NYC, overseeing the provision of music lessons to children throughout the city. My teaching experience spans various settings, allowing me to adapt to diverse educational environments and make a positive impact on the lives of students through the power of music.
My teaching style is rooted in cultural responsiveness, universal design for learning (UDL), and the development of social-emotional skills. I believe in creating an inclusive and engaging learning environment where all students feel valued and empowered. By incorporating culturally responsive practices, I honor and celebrate the diverse backgrounds and experiences of my students, making connections between music and their cultural identities. I also embrace universal design for learning, ensuring that my lessons cater to different learning styles and abilities. I provide multiple means of representation, engagement, and expression to make learning accessible and meaningful for all students. Moreover, I prioritize the cultivation of social-emotional skills, recognizing the importance of creating a safe and supportive space for students to express themselves, build relationships, and develop empathy. While maintaining a focus on cultural responsiveness, UDL, and social-emotional learning, I strive to make my lessons both fun and challenging. I believe that joyful and engaging experiences foster a love for music and enhance student motivation. I incorporate interactive activities, creative projects, and hands-on experiences to create an atmosphere of excitement and discovery. Through a balance of enjoyment and academic rigor, I aim to inspire students to push their boundaries and reach their full potential in music and beyond.
I have received honors and awards for my work with Teach For America, as well as academic distinctions. I hold certifications in Orff Schulwerk and possess teaching licenses in New Jersey, New York, and Indiana. Additionally, I have experience with the Responsive Classroom approach, fostering a positive and inclusive classroom environment. These accomplishments reflect my commitment to excellence in education and my dedication to professional growth.
I have a strong background in choral music, including participation in choirs, a Cappella groups, and opera roles. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Music Education with a choral emphasis from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, with a minor in conducting. I also completed an Arts Administration Certificate from Indiana University and obtained a Master's degree in Teaching from Relay Graduate School of Education in New York. My diverse education equips me with the skills to provide a comprehensive and enriching music education to my students.
