ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Over the course of my 11 years in a teaching career, my style, attitudes towards education, and classroom management strategies have changed drastically. Simultaneously the world has changed as well. With each passing year, our students are facing new challenges, new ideologies, and even new learning styles (hello 2020 in a nutshell). Our roles as teachers are to consider how we communicate these changes with our students. Are we still using the same euro-centric examples in our lessons? Are we re-distributing the same handout that was passed onto us decades ago, with little design and communication in mind? Are we still relying on texts that portray challenges that are no longer relevant to the lives of our students? It's not so much about re-inventing the wheel, but I strongly believe, great teaching comes from the habit of self-reflection, adaptation, and a desire for growth. In the last 10+ years, I've both taught and volunteered at various high school (grades 9-10) in Toronto, Canada. Some of my students joke "Miss, is there anything you don't teach?". Yes, there are subjects I wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole, but I love learning new things and seeing where I can take them. My core subjects include Social Science and Humanities, English, and sometimes Visual Arts. With a gap year in between, I left teaching to study copywriting and design, after spending a year in a cubicle, I longed for my classroom, my students, and my ability to inspire. So a mere year later, I returned to the classroom, with a copywriting certificate under my belt and training in Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. My new skill set allowed me to add a new layer to my teaching - the art of graphic design in the classroom. I completely re-evaluated all of my lessons and re-considered how I was communicating with my students. My goal is to share my knowledge and experiences with you, so that you may, in turn, challenge yourself and look for ways to re-evaluate your own handouts, presentations, and activities. Even after all these years, I am forever learning new things and adding new repertoire to my courses. I look forward to learning from other teachers and educators worldwide, and I'm excited to see where this incredible career takes me next!
