I began as a 9th and 10 grade ELA teacher, then moved to a different state where I now teach 6th, 7th and 8th grades in the role of a Reading interventionist. After watching middle school struggle to distinguish between words like bake and back, I began educating myself and focused on teaching basic reading skills to older students. My work targets the child who needs exposure to middle school level vocabulary words and content but also needs basic reading strategies, word attack strategies, and ample opportunity for repetition.
I use Direct Instruction strategies, borrowing from SRA and Wilson and adding my own strategies to teach word attack skills. Repetition of concepts is key. Because disadvantaged students and learning disabled students need ample exposure to vocabulary, I do fluency exercises and contests to provide fun opportunities for repetition and exposure. I use color coded visual presentations that highlight word parts for students who have difficulty with reversals. I offer opportunities for comparison and exploration of the English language.
