TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Dedicated.  Multicultural.  Passionate. These are just a few words which describe Harlem Roots, the educational arm of Welcome to Harlem, our boutique tour company. Dedicated to multicultural awareness and outstanding cultural curriculum, Harlem Roots is here to provide closed reading lessons and educational tours about the history and importance of Harlem. Beginning with the small Dutch village from which Harlem derives its name, to the cultural significance of the Harlem Renaissance, and continuing throughout decades filled with important African American and multicultural history, people, places and events. Why Harlem Roots? Harlem’s fascinating history makes it a top destination choice for visitors from around the world as there is so much to learn about this diverse and always-changing community. Long-term residents are proud to call Harlem their home and new Harlemites devour this history and make it their own! Harlem Roots offers reading comprehension lessons that focus on non-fiction Harlem themes, which include substantive historical data about people, places, and events dating from 1658 through the present.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Our lessons use informational text to cover topics in Social Studies, U.S. and World History, geography, and non-fiction. Serving grade levels K-12, our lessons are excellent for homeschooling, higher education, and adult education classes. To ensure we cater to all learners, Harlem Roots lessons are divided into four primary levels: Level One (two-page worksheets) Level Two(125 – 150 words) - 3rd, and 4th Level Two (350 – 375 words) - 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades; and Level Three (500 – 525 words) - 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades. The Harlem Roots Lesson Plans included expansive and comprehensive components, consisting of the following topics: * Fun Facts/Interesting Facts * Infographic * Puzzle * Reading * Vocabulary * Questions (critical thinking, short answer, multiple choice, true or false, opinion, and more.) Harlem Roots resource types are varied and based on a student's unique needs and requirements. They include individual lesson plans, worksheets, printables, activities, fun stuff, graphics, digital downloads, tools for Common Core, closed reading, cultural curriculum, literature, reading comprehension passages, and informational text.

The Mission of Harlem Roots is to present Common Core Multicultural Curriculum for Everyone. At Harlem Roots, we believe in making high quality Harlem education accessible to everyone. Our full complement of lessons are available for sale to the public. You can download a lesson(s) from our website or request a color hardcopy, which is shipped directly to you. Please note that schools and other multi-user organizations must first purchase a license to access the lessons. Harlem Roots also offers tours and related activities available for purchase, in addition to our lessons. Our activities and lessons provide versatility for general classroom use, guided reading groups, or for independent reading and teaching at learning centers. They are also well-suited as supplements to other lessons, as morning work, homework, or anything within a teacher’s broad imagination. Harlem Roots lessons meet the Common Core standards for grades K – 12, and is the perfect place to learn all about Harlem! With educational tours and in-depth lesson plans, Harlem Roots has everything you need to bring the history and vibrancy of Harlem to life.
