“We are, as a species, addicted to story. Even when the body goes to sleep, the mind stays up all night, telling itself stories.” - Jonathan Gottschall, The Storytelling Animal

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I spent thirteen wonderful years teaching high school social studies, speech, debate, computer science, and newspaper production. I mentored students as a debate coach, Model United Nations advisor, and newspaper advisor. For the last twelve years, I have been in the administrative offices of my state's virtual school. I have loved working with teachers to develop engaging learning environments, particularly for students in rural schools that often lack advanced coursework or unique course titles. Over the last ten years, I have enjoyed teaching undergraduate and graduate courses as an adjunct professor, including technology integration methods, social studies methods, teacher evaluation, social media, and graphic design. I also enjoy training teachers, particularly concerning using technology to deliver engaging instruction in classrooms!

MY TEACHING STYLE

Good teaching involves mastering pedagogy. Great teaching is good pedagogy, mixed with a bit of performance art. Great teachers work hard to find materials that provide students with hooks to engage them in the content and connect with the vast narrative contained in each and every subject across the curriculum. Very little content is naturally engaging by itself to the majority of our students, so, great teachers must step in and find ways to connect students to the stories.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I have been honored as a "Distinguished Educator" and "Great Teacher" from the education foundation in my school district. I was voted "Most Inspirational Teacher" from the Honor Society at my school, an honor that I cherish! Since moving to an administrative position, I have been honored with the ISTE "Make IT Happen Award," the Blackboard Catalyst Award for Teaching and Learning, and the Eric Jensen Leadership Award from the Northwest Council for Computer Education. I have also been the recipient of a number of grants during my time in education.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I love learning! I have a BA in Political Science and Secondary Education from Carroll College (Go Saints!). I received my Master of Science degree in Educational Technology from Walden University. Recently, I complete my Doctor of Education Degree with a focus on teaching and learning, technology education, and online learning from the University of Montana (Go Griz!).
