TEACHING EXPERIENCE

After completing a bachelors of commerce (our equivalent of a BSBA)and a post graduate degree in education (PGCE), I taught business studies, accounting, computer studies and economic and management sciences in a state school in South Africa for three years. After this, I moved to the UK, where I completed a CELTA course (which is the most internationally recognized TEFL qualification). The CELTA course, in conjunction with my years of teaching english language classes for foreign students, is where I really learnt how to teach. The TEFL method focuses around engaging the learners, group work and learning while having fun. My activities on this website aim to bring the methodology into the traditional, non-TEFL classroom.

MY TEACHING STYLE

My TEFL experience taught me that learners participate best in a dynamic, engaging, fast-paced and competitive environment. My activity worksheets therefore try to facilitate this kind of environment - one which gets learners competing in groups, and which approach business concepts in novel, fun and engaging ways. Regarding my teaching style itself, I have always been one for facilitating interesting discussions and fun activities, rather than giving monologues in front of the class. Although there is often a time for teacher talking time, I prefer allowing the learners to get involved in the lesson, so as to discover concepts for themselves and with their classmates - thus empowering them to take ownership of their learning.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

Well, a number of my former students have written to me saying that I was the best teacher they've ever had. Again, I feel it's down to my learner-centered approach, which encourages them to participate and get involved in the lesson. I also put it down to being well-prepared for lessons.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

Bachelor of Commerce (B.Comm) Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGCE) Certificate in English Language Training to Adults (CELTA)
