DORIS SIMS

Dr. Doris J. Sims has over forty years of experience in education. I first taught pre-school-2nd grade. While teaching in elementary school, I was looking for information to celebrate "Black History Week" (now called African-American History Month) I designed my own curriculum which included inventors because the young students could visibly identify with the information. The inventions were all around them. While working on my PhD. at Claremont Graduate University, I researched more in depth on how to include African-American history into American history year-round,therefore I wrote a special series of books designed to heighten cultural awareness and self-esteem. This series also provides information about the African-American to enlighten the broader population thereby, increasing their appreciation of the African-American's influence in American history. I wrote four exciting stories about black inventors which became picture books with accompanying teacher guides. More books are on the way.

I received a full Fellowship to attend Claremont Graduate University to complete my PhD. I was honored as the Distinguished Alumni from California State University, Los Angeles. I was invited to be a guest lecturer in Taiwan, and conducted a study tour to China to research the one child policy and other cultural issues. In addition, I have received many local awards and honors.

I received my B.A. from California State University at Los Angeles in the field of Home Economics and my M.A. degree in Elementary Education from Cal State LA. I received a PhD. from Claremont Graduate University in Early Education or Child Development.

I was an Associate Professor at California State University at Los Angeles and other colleges and universities for over 30 years in the field of Child Development and Family Relations. I founded a preschool, and several elementary through high schools in the Los Angeles area. For ten years I was a juvenile hall counselor to troubled youth, and taught parenting classes to parents of incarcerated youth. I was a consultant to The Institute for Black Parenting where I taught parenting classes to foster and adoptive parents. I have presented at schools, colleges, churches, and conferences nationally and internationally. I am also a consultant in all aspects of education and family relations.
