TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Charles Kuner (BA, ‘62) is a retired secondary school educator. Charles was born on July 3, 1938 to George and Rose Kuner. He married Evelyn Sioc- Kuner on Oct. 11, 1997. Besides the BA in History at Roosevelt University in 1962 Charles has a MA in Teaching at Northeastern Illinois State University in 1970, and a MA in Urban Sociology in 1977. At the University of Chicago Charles earned a certificate in the Basic Liberal Arts Program of Liberal Education for adults in a graduation ceremony in 2009.Currently he is completing his third year in the program. Charles taught for 45 years before retiring; 42 of those years at Farragut Career Academy. During that time he’s had articles published in professional journals and local newspapers. He established at Farragut a David Cerda Legal clinic with the help of his law students and pioneering courses in the high school curriculum such as Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Career Education, Ethnic Studies, African American/Latin American History, and Introduction to the Social Sciences. He co-coached a Debate Team for 5 years. He was an active member of such organizations as the Constitutional Rights Foundation, the Mikva Challenge foundation, Close-Up Foundation, and the National Conference of Community and Justice. His students, over the years, also became engaged with these organizations. At one time he was also a member of the International Platform Association. In terms of awards, and academic excellence, Charles was a recipient of the Recognition of Excellence by the Illinois State Board of Education in 1983-84, a Teacher Recognition award from the Black School Educators Foundation in 1985, an Education award from the Blum-Kovler Foundation in 1989, a Suave Performance Plus award in 2002, Community Leadership award from the Little Village Community Development Organization in 2003, named Ambassador for Peace by the Interreligious and International Federation for World Peace in 2004, and a Fry Fellowship from the University of Chicago. Currently, he is a founding sponsor of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Foundation going back to 2006. Charles is also doing emeritus substitute teaching at the University of Chicago Lab School and Francis Parker High School as well as co-teaching an education course for student teachers at DePaul University. He is a member of the retired chapter of the Chicago Teachers Union, the Chicago Retired Teachers Association, and the National Council of the Social Studies. His avocations are the collection of rare books, and classical music records.
