I am a 9th and 10th grade English Language Arts educator!
At the core of my pedagogy, I believe that diverse, scaffolded, and inclusive practices within the classroom will not only lead to students being more successful but will allow for all students to become more accepting members of the community as well. I center equity, representation, discussion, diversity, and cultural relevancy in my practices.
I have presented 5 times in the Georgia Council of Teachers of English Annual Conference and have been published in the Spring 2021 journal of GCTE’s quarterly publication Scribbles n’ Bits. At the 2020 conference, I presented “Promoting Student Agency for Healing: What can teachers do in times of mourning,” which focused on how English Language Arts classrooms are conducive to bereavement and processing following a death for both students and the teachers themselves. I also presented “Correcting the Cultureless Crisis: Practicing Inclusivity and Diversity within the ELA Classroom,” which focused on practical means for educators to include more gender, sexuality, race, and ethnicity diverse texts, writing prompts, and activities within their classroom. At a roundtable session, I presented “Promoting Student Agency and Identity Through Inclusive Practices” which discussed the lack of representation for LGBTQ+ students in the Language Arts classroom and provided best practices, resources, and text suggestions that amplify the queer experience. At the 2021 GCTE Annual Conference, I presented the sessions “Moving Beyond Listening: How White Teachers Can Amplify BIPOC Voices in Classrooms and School Communities” and “Friend, not Foe: The Beauty of Caregiver Communication in the Digital Realm.” In the Spring 2021 publication of GCTE's Scribbles n' Bits, I published a piece discussing how to use digital tools as a means of engaging students in contemplative practices, community building, and co-construction of learning.
