All of my teaching experience has been within the realm of special education. I began my journey with elementary EBD students with particular attention paid to deescalating varying behaviors prior to main stream inclusion. The next road led to working with high school students in a charter school setting. It was fantastic to be part of making a huge impact in the lives of students who struggled terribly in the traditional setting. The foundational structure was hands-on, experiential learning with an element of community service. The past few years brought me to a phenomenal team of teachers and students within a level III autism program. This is a very different avenue than I had ever been on before, but one I have found extremely rewarding and fulfilling.
It would be very difficult to put my teaching style into one single category. To be successful in special education requires the ability to switch between styles on the fly in order to best serve the student and their needs. I lean most toward the hands-on style, with demonstrator and facilitator interjected as frequently as needed.
