TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Maggie Olivo has served as the director of the IU JSOM’s Musical Beginnings program and has taught elementary general music for over 10 years. Her early childhood music training spans methodologies of John Feierabend, Musikgärten, Kodály Method and Orff-Keetman Schulwerk. Her pieces have been performed by the Southwest String Quartet, Tucson Symphony Orchestra, and various Bloomington musicians, both children and professional. She has worked with musicians of great artistry from all over the world and is excited to make BloomingSongs accessible to the TPT community!

MY TEACHING STYLE

BloomingSongs gives teachers access to local musicians and their music, spanning a wide range of musical styles: contemporary classical, jazz, electronic sampling, Middle Eastern, bluegrass, choral music, and tango, all tailored to developmental needs of younger children. Kids of all ages can learn musical basic: improvisation, dynamics, musical forms, tempos, articulations, and various movements. Its TPT resources will be a place for interactive listening maps, sheet music, lesson plans, and manipulatives.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

Project director, Maggie Olivo, has presented teacher-training workshops to early childhood specialists and music teachers throughout Indiana. Her district awarded her a "Star of Excellence Award." The BloomingSongs project has been recognized by Bloom Magazine, Indiana Daily Student, Herald Times, and the Bloomington Entertainment Arts District. BloomingSongs have been performed at the Indiana State House, South by Southwest, and more. BloomingSongs is the recipient of multiple grants, including the Bloomington Urban Enterprise Zone grant from the Bloomington Entertainment Arts District, Smithville Foundation Grant, Puffin Foundation Grant and The Foundation of Monroe County Community Schools' grant.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

Maggie Olivo holds a Bachelors in Music Composition and a Masters of Arts Teaching Certification, both from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. She is certified in Kodaly and Feierabend methodologies.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

BloomingSongs gives Bloomington area families access to local musicians and their music:contemporary classical, jazz, electronica, Middle Eastern, bluegrass, choral music, and Brazilian choros. Kids of all ages can learn the basics behind improvisation, dynamics, musical forms, tempos, articulations, and various movements. The BloomingSongs project has also offered interactive concerts to area schools, and provided teacher-training workshops. This project is made possible by The Smithville Grant Foundation, Bloomington Urban Enterprise Zone Grant, area music teachers and early childhood specialists, Monroe County Public Library, Monroe County Community Foundation, Ivy Tech John Waldron Fine Arts Center, Russian Recording, Reimagining Opera for Kids, B-Town Jazz, BloomingSongs composers and musicians, IU Jacobs' PreCollege Program, IU Children's Choir, Boys and Girls Club and the IU African American Choral Ensemble. BloomingSongs audio is accessible for free so that it is available to the community at-large. The BloomingSongs project is driven by grant funding, community partnerships and volunteers. All funds generated by this TPT site will go directly to the BloomingSongs project costs: performer compensation, production costs, advertising, and miscellaneous expenses.
