TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Many moons ago, I became a Kindergarten teacher. I love kids, love to sing, and love telling stories so things worked out well in the Kindergarten world. I taught for 22 years (some years in 1st-4th grades) and had a blast! Then, I got the opportunity to write teacher materials for some major educational publishers. So off I went into the world of educational writing. That was great, but I still wanted to work with children, so for the past 18 years I’ve also been a professional storyteller. In 2014, I was selected by the Virginia Commission for the Arts to be one of their Performing Artists, traveling across Virginia telling stories and holding workshops for students and teachers. In 2000, I founded Barb Lawson Books, a company that produces books and materials to help teachers with Virginia Standards of Learning.

MY TEACHING STYLE

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I was awarded the Dawbarn Award presented by the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge (VA). “Each year, the (Dawbarn) Awards event honors educators who have demonstrated a commitment to inspiring, encouraging, and fostering the education of young people.” And I got it for being a teacher and storyteller! How awesome is that? The C.C.C. Legacy Award was presented to me, along with co-writers Duane Hahn, Elizabeth Massie and Richard Adams, by the Civilian Conservation Corps Legacy Foundation. It was awarded for writing and producing SHENANDOAH MOON, a musical that tells the story and preserves the history of the Skyline Drive, which was built by the C.C.C. in Virginia in the 1930s.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I graduated from James Madison University with an early childhood education degree. Took Master classes in education at the University of Virginia.
