TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Kevin is a gifted astronomer, having worked as a consultant with NASA, the Chandra X-Ray Observatory launched on the space shuttle with the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, and other ground-based observatories. Kevin won national and international awards in his field, was both a Wright Fellow at Tufts University and an Einstein Fellow working with NASA Headquarters, the US House of Representatives, and the US Dept. of Energy Office of Science on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, and did some work with Brookhaven National Laboratory. Besides the numerous workshops he's presented over the years at libraries, observatories, and science centers, some noteworthy ones include those made at Tufts University, State University of New York at Stony Brook, the National Science Teachers Association's National Convention, American Association for the Advancement of Science Breakfast with Scientists, and the National Parks Service. Kevin also worked with the Telescopes in Education (TIE) project with Mount Wilson Observatory, and helped build the RMCC Observatory.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I like using a holistic approach to experiental learning, motivating and enabling students to connect using KWL and ReadWriteThink Webbing as interactive tools helping to create, develop and implement cross-curricular thematic units. Whenever possible, I like to employ alternative assessment strategies such as checklists, rubrics and portfolios. I begin each unit using a discrepant event to arouse curiosity and open the door toward learning new concepts. Innovation and creativity toward understanding leads to interdisciplinary connections to real-world scientific awareness using cutting edge technology and novel teaching techniques to maximize critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Based on a conference I gave at Tufts University where secondary science educators gathered from across the U.S. and six other nations, Interdisciplinary Approaches to Science Education is a workshop for middle and high school science teachers who desire to structure a learning environment that is truly innovative and effective, naturally fostering the achievement of benchmarks and standards dealing with scientific inquiry and habits of mind.
