TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am a former high school Biology teacher who loves helping students learn about science. I earned my B.S. in Biology from UNC Chapel Hill and my M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction from the University of Delaware. I spent a year and half in a Doctor of Physical Therapy program before deciding to become a teacher. As an Education Intern with Delaware Nature Society, I taught students pre-K through 7th grade in school outreaches and field studies. In the public schools I have taught Biology, Honors Anatomy & Physiology, Earth Science, and Plant Science. For a short time I taught college-level Biology and Physical Science lessons through online videos at Education Portal. Currently I tutor high school Biology, Chemistry, Algebra & Precalculus through WyzAnt Tutoring. I am also an SAT and ACT instructor for The Princeton Review.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I really like to let the kids tell me what they need. Not necessarily in words; I mean I want to get to know the kid, to get a feel for where they're at, what their attitude is about the subject and learning in general. Then I want to match that energy and help them get from where they are to where they need to be. There is no one-size-fits-all method for teaching. The teachers that can reach every student in a large, diverse classroom are truly talented!!

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

On November 30th 2013 at 11:47 PM I won the National Novel Writer's Month by writing a 50,000-word "novel" in 30 days. :D

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

In 2004 I earned my B.S. in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 2009 I earned my M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction, with a Specialization in Secondary Science, from the University of Delaware.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I have 2 cats named Lennie and MewMew. I have two birds named Buddy and Kiddo. I raised the birds from chicks 8 years ago; they are wild baby European Starlings and they had fallen from their nest. They can speak English, they take a bath every day and put themselves to bed at night. Lennie is a big white male cat I got from the shelter. He knocks over trash, breaks dishes, eats plants, but he is still an awesome cat. MewMew is a tiny long-haired silver princess who is perfect in every way. I found her as a kitten inside the Food Lion grocery store hiding under the carts. I brought her home in an empty tuna box.
