What educators are saying

This was a great way to encourage kids to communicate and have conversations with each other at the beginning of the year.
We did this at the beginning of the school year. The activities that go along with the story are very cute and students loved doing them.

Learning Objective

Students will tell about their fears about going back to school as they relate to the book and feel empowered as they give advice to the Penelope about school.

Description

Back to school activities for the primary grades. This resource is perfect during first day of school activities or when introducing rules, friendship, and kindness at the beginning of the year. It's the beginning of the school year and the Penelope has to go to school. She is nervous. Then, things don't go her way when she eats her classmates and they become scared of her.

After reading the book, We Don't Eat Our Classmates, by Ryan Higgins, do these four activities:

  • Students will give advice to Penelope, who is nervous to go to school.
  • They will learn about the term characters and write how Penelope changed over the course of the story.
  • Students will decide on what animal would make a better class pet than the fish that bit Penelope's finger as everyone deserves to feel safe in school.
  • Last, students will tell their opinion on whether they would want Penelope in their class.

All of the activities come with a fun craft perfect for the beginning of the year.
