Description

This document includes 4 primary sources (with background), which students may use to answer the question:

-How did conflict affect life in North America during the Madison presidency?

Students should use a primary source guide, such as the "Written Document Analysis Worksheet" from archives.gov to analyze the four sources.

The documents analyze conflict from the following 4 perspectives:

-Tecumseh, Shawnee leader of the "Pan-Indian" resistance

-Republican "Warhawks" in Congress

-William Dunlop, a British soldier during the invasion of Canada

-Francis Scott Key, author of The Star-Spangled Banner

By the end of the activity, students should be able to write a paragraph (or complete a graphic organizer) explaining how conflict affected the lives of diverse people on the North American continent from 1812 to 1814.
