Description

Sometimes students (and their teachers) need a break from the pressures of the romantic aspects of Valentine’s Day. This activity looks at the entirely-unromantic St. Valentine’s Day Massacre in Chicago, 1929. Students will read the historic New York Times Article on the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre and complete one or more reading activities.

Contents:

  • Set of reading questions, including recall and opinion (inference and analysis). Questions are in order of the text. Answer key is provided. Last question is a critical thinking question to wrap up the reading. Questions provided as a worksheet with room to write answers plus as a list to use when writing on a separate sheet.

  • Set of 15 critical thinking questions for analysis. Students can respond to one or more questions (student or teacher selected) in a paragraph or more with evidence or reasoning. Paragraph model and mini-rubric included. Can also be used for discussion.

  • Set of graphic organizers for analysis of the text. Includes KWL on the Massacre, The Victims Table (with Key), Timeline of Events (with Key) and Word Webs: The Victims, Language, Capone's Involvement (With keys) and a blank word web
