Description

Are you looking for fresh insights to help you and your students dig into the deeper meaning behind the masterpiece Rear Window by Alfred Hitchcock?

This is a twenty-four page informational booklet that contains comprehensive analysis of the way in which Hitchcock constructs meaning using film devices, with accompanying still-shots for reference.

I created this resource to help my class more deeply examine the film and the way in which Hitchcock uses his craft to convey themes and ideas to his audience. There are also references in this booklet to key themes, the context (1950s America) and Hitchcock's authorial intent.

What is in this booklet?

  • Still-shots from key scenes in the film, with descriptions of film devices and how they are working to convey meaning in the scene
  • Information on key themes and motifs used by Hitchcock in this film, including key quotes where useful

My students wrote a creative piece and used this resource to help build their setting/atmosphere and show deeper understanding of the meaning behind the film. They also used this for exam revision, as they were additionally asked to write an essay responding to the film.

* This resource contains scene analysis and is an informative resource for teachers and students, as opposed to offering specific activities for students to complete.

How you could use it in your classroom:
Watch specific scenes as a class, or direct your students to independently watch certain scenes. As you discuss scene construction, refer back to this booklet and unpack the scene together. As a class, you could also read the descriptions of scenes in this booklet together and discuss. This resource is a great starting point for class discussions!

I sell a range of Rear Window products on my store page, including a free Power Point Presentation on Rear Window. Feel free to have a look!
