Description

Analysing and creating visual texts is a key part of the Australian curriculum. Students will come across a range of still images including advertisements, awareness campaign posters, movie posters, journalistic photographs, magazine covers and much more. To be successful in analysing and creating visual texts, students need to be familiar with the metalanguage used to discuss elements of a still image including the content (symbolic codes), technical construction (technical codes) as well as any text used (written codes).

This presentation is a clear and engaging way to introduce or revise these key concepts and to supplement any visual analysis unit. It will get students thinking about the ways that still images can be deliberate constructed to target specific audiences, convey ideas and position audience response. It is suitable and adaptable for grades 8-12.

The presentation includes 35 slides and covers topics such as:

  • learning objectives
  • overview
  • symbolic codes (with activities)
  • technical codes (with activities)
  • written codes (with activities)
