Description

An important part of learning to read nonfiction texts is being able to identify nonfiction features and to understand how they help you as a reader.
While using the smartboard to teach these features, I also use a student activity book. The activity book has an activity page to go along with each feature.
You can view the activity book by clicking on the link below:

12 nonfiction features are included:
photographs
labels
captions
comparisons
cutaways
maps
types of print
close-ups
headings
table of contents
index
glossary

Each nonfiction feature includes an explanation of the feature, how it helps you as a reader, and several examples of the features. I use this over the span of a few weeks in my first grade classroom. Each day we focus on a new feature. I also chart the features on chart paper to create a growing list of the features and how they help us as readers. After we discuss a new feature, the kids have time to explore nonfiction books in our classroom to look for examples of the feature that we learned that day. They are able to use post-its to mark pages where they found the feature. We then share the examples that were found. I have found that this helps students have an even deeper understanding of each feature and how they are helpful to us as we read to learn information. While using the smartboard to teach these features, I also use the student activity book. The activity book has an activity page to go along with each feature.
