MICHELLE CARTER BUNDLE

The high-profile case of Michelle Carter, who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter for sending text messages urging her boyfriend to commit suicide, has raised important questions about the role of social media in our lives. The case is especially relevant for high school students, who are growing up in a world where technology plays an increasingly central role. By studying the case, students can learn about the potentially harmful effects of social media and the importance of responsible digital citizenship. In addition, the case provides a useful framework for discussing wider issues such as cyberbullying and mental health. As high school students become increasingly engaged with social media, it is essential that they are equipped with the knowledge and skills to use it safely and responsibly.

SUPREME COURT PETITION: “Michelle Carter’s conviction for involuntary manslaughter in connection with Conrad Roy III’s suicide is unprecedented. Massachusetts is the only state to have affirmed the conviction of a physically absent defendant who encouraged another person to commit suicide with words alone. Before this case, no state had interpreted its common law or enacted an assisted suicide statute to criminalize such “pure speech,” and no other defendant had been convicted for encouraging another person to take his own life where the defendant neither provided the actual means of death nor physically participated in the suicide."

My CCSDs are an excellent supplement to any class focusing on ethics, law, justice, argumentative writing, and debate, and they also work well as last-minute sub-plans or stand-alone lessons.
