Description

Here's a fun, active, and engaging activity to incorporate into your metric measurement unit! Students participate in a "Metric Olympics" competition where they are allowed 3 trials in 6 different events. Day 1 is for the outdoor games, and Day 2 is for the indoor games.

Outdoor games: Plate Discus Throw, Standing Long Jump, and Straw Javelin

Indoor games: Sand Grab, Paper Towel Wringer, and Chopstick Grab

Through the 6 events, students have the opportunity to practice and apply their measurement skills for length, mass, liquid volume, and solid volume.

There were a couple of years that we tried this as competition between our 7th and 8th grade science classes...that was a lot of fun! We made a really big event of it by advertising it around campus and announcing results on the school's morning announcements!
