Description

This unit plan is created for the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program at the 4-5 level. It covers the periodic table and the basic chemistry concepts surrounding that. The unit uses Criterion D as an assessment and is fully integrated with the NGSS standard HS-PS1-1. The unit approaches the topic through the lens of conflict minerals and cell phones, which hooks the students and engages them throughout the unit. Even though this unit is written for the IB program, it is perfect for any 9-10th grade science classroom.

NGSSHS-PS1-1
Use the periodic table as a model to predict the relative properties of elements based on the patterns of electrons in the outermost energy level of atoms. Examples of properties that could be predicted from patterns could include reactivity of metals, types of bonds formed, numbers of bonds formed, and reactions with oxygen. Assessment is limited to main group elements. Assessment does not include quantitative understanding of ionization energy beyond relative trends.
