Description

Have you ever wanted to create a unit that will get your students outside into the forest? Are you interested in project based science that can engage students on a practical and theoretical level? This unit will suffice to bring out real student driven inquiry into your classroom. Mapping the Sugarbush is a unit that can utilize forest resources in which your school might have access. It requires that some sort of project that utilizes forest resources already be set up in the forest. For this unit, we have utilized a maple sugar operation that students have set up and maintained. The purpose of this unit is to learn how to utilize forest resources by managing the forest. Students will end up performing an original experiment on the forest that will end up providing knowledge on how to manage the project. These experiments could be used as science fair projects or personal projects.

Evaluate or refine a technological solution that reduces impacts of human activities on natural systems. Examples of data on the impacts of human activities could include the quantities and types of pollutants released, changes to biomass and species diversity, or areal changes in land surface use (such as for urban development, agriculture and livestock, or surface mining). Examples for limiting future impacts could range from local efforts (such as reducing, reusing, and recycling resources) to large-scale geoengineering design solutions (such as altering global temperatures by making large changes to the atmosphere or ocean).
