Added 7/29/23: "The Most Dangerous Game" short story unit--good for 2 weeks, ideally to be used after introducing literary elements with the Data Sheet and/or the "Feather Pillow" mini-unit! Includes 10 scaffolded tasks, from vocabulary in Cornell Note form to two kinds of reading journals, several graphic organizers to assist students with different levels and needs, and questions covering different parts of the story. Also includes two forms of the story itself, an anticipation guide, and optional materials, plus the Theme graphic organizer also included here.

Added 10/31/22: Three scaffolded versions of "The Telltale Heart" for Halloween + a dramatic recitation for kicks! The versions range from a paraphrased version of the tale for lower ELLs in upper grades, or for middle-schoolers; proceeds to a story packet that can be completed independently by older students, but uses very simple language to gauge reading comprehension and analysis, as well as vocabulary in context; and a higher-level version with no extra supports. Added 10/23: Elements of Poetry Cornell Notes (scaffolded, with two levels of answers)!

The Literary Elements Cornell Notes, Plot Elements Cornell Notes & Plot Chart/Simplified AP Lit. Major Works Data Sheet scaffold carefully onto one another:

• The Lit. Elements form introduces the terms in a general way, as well as some related ones like literary devices;
• The Plot Elements Cornell Notes gives students detailed directions and space on page 2 as to how to apply the terms to a work of their choice;
• and the Plot Diagram is structured like a simplified AP Lit. Major Works Data Sheet in that it provides space for students to form a comprehensive view of a story's plot, main characters, conflict, theme, mood, tone, and even space on the back to map out compelling moments. I use it with my Pre-AP classes when we read fiction.

And these three encompass just a THIRD of the resources in this bundle!

Right now, this bundle includes:

• Guided Notes + Examples of Common Types of Figurative Language (graphic-heavy)
• Step-by-step process to find THEME in 3 levels: with guided notes, images and extra explanations (+ answer key) to introduce the topic (front and back of one page); with filled-in notes for quick review; simplified version for use after students are familiar with the concept; and a one-page version without clipart for those who wish to print in black and white and save paper or find the clipart too "cutesy"
• Scaffolded Literary Elements in Cornell Note Form: two levels that include elements of plot; define common literary terms like conflict, mood and tone; and define literary devices.
• Scaffolded Plot Elements in Cornell Note Form: this product goes more in depth than in the Literary Elements Cornell Note form, and serves as a detailed introduction to the elements of plot with the back providing an opportunity for application.
• Plot Diagram with Application & Extension: includes both an Anchor Chart form that defines terms, and a version that students can apply to texts you read in class. The back and space around the plot chart provide space for students to analyze the text by genre, characters, and compelling moments, and is fashioned like a simplified AP Major Works Data Sheet that can be used with shorter texts.
• Mood vs. Tone T-Chart that used Guided Notes to help students differentiate between the two;
• Entire mini-unit that applies several of the above resources to "The Feather Pillow" and adds: THREE Characterization worksheets (a one-pager that also incorporates setting and mood, and a very simple "board game" in two forms, in which text evidence describing the characters are cut up and students organize them either into indirect vs. direct characterization, or for lower students, use them to discern which main characters are being described); an Anticipation Guide; Vocabulary sheets with prefixes and suffixes noted to assist deeper comprehension; guided reading/discussion questions based on the text, and TWO versions of the story--one for ELLs and one for higher or native-speaking students!
• Elements of Poetry in Cornell Note form with scaffolded definitions included!
• Mini-Unit with Two Poems: shows students how to compare and contrast tone, mood and theme across texts! Includes full texts of two poems and answer key as examples.
