Description
You're looking for an engaging, summative assessment based on a film, that isn't the typical essay question prompt. Look no further than this resource!
I first watched GATTACA in my high school English class, and all these years later I love showing it to my students - its themes are still as relevant today as ever.
This engaging, English B resource includes:
- A text (a film review) as the base for the Socratic seminar
- Reflective questions based on the text
- Detailed instructions & guidelines
- Sentence starters - speaking prompts for the Socratic Seminar
- A table for students to complete their peer review
- A rubric based on the Individual Oral
I used this in my English B Diploma Class.
How it works:
After students watch GATTACA, they read a review on the film and answer questions. These questions form the foundation for their Socratic Seminar next class.
In the following class they are divided into two groups - the inner and outer circle.
The inner circle discusses the film review and their answers, using sentence starters which are provided as speaking prompts. During this time, the outer circle observes and completes a peer review.
Once they are finished, groups swap places and repeat the process.
Apart from the review and questions, this resource includes detailed instructions for the Socratic Seminar and guides for both inner and outer circles.
Benefits:
✅ No prior planning is necessary, just click print and divide your students into two groups for the Socratic Seminar.
✅ GATTACA is a fantastic film as it can be linked to ALL of the English B themes:
- "identity",
- "experiences",
- "human ingenuity",
- "social organisation"
- and even human rights as part of "sharing the planet".
✅ Excellent preparation for the English B HL Individual Oral - rubric is included.
✅ Not only suitable for IB English B. It's also highly relevant for any other curriculum you may be teaching - where you are looking to develop critical thinking and analysis skills with your students.
