Description
A film featuring a young Ethan Hawke, and can be linked to ALL of the English B themes! Need I say more?!
I have created a unit for English B based around GATTACA which includes an activity for before, during and after the film.
How it works:
The first resource is a group reflection activity that can be completed before watching the film in order to build context, foster curiosity and generate discussion. Students work in groups to analyse a film poster and make connections to English B Themes and Theory of Knowledge.
The second resource is a listening comprehension activity. While students watch the film, they use this worksheet to answer questions. I used this as practice for Paper 2 (listening comprehension) for the English B Exam. Answers are included.
The third resource is a Socratic Seminar. It is to be used after watching the film, and apart from a textual prompt and questions, this resource includes detailed instructions for the Socratic Seminar, guides for both inner and outer circles and also a rubric so the activity can be used for summative assessment.
Benefits:
GATTACA is a fantastic film as it can be linked to ALL of the English B themes: "identities", "experiences", "human ingenuity", "social organisation" and even human rights and ethics as part of "sharing the planet".
It's also highly relevant for any other curriculum you may be teaching - where you are looking to develop critical thinking and analysis skills with your students.
