Description
This French alphabet activity is a fun way to get beginning Core French students to practice the alphabet and letter sounds. Using a variety of image and word cards, students spell out common words to their partners and the partners write the words they hear spelled. It's a quick and easy French speaking and listening activity for students just starting out!
This activity can be further supported visually by using my alphabet posters on your bulletin board or walls.
Includes 42 cards with common French words that students usually learn early on, so they are easily exposed to tons of new vocabulary before learning them formally in a unit. Also includes a printable alphabet page with example words for each letter that students can put in their folders as well as student writing page. Teacher directions are in English. Student pages are French-only.
This can be used in French immersion, but this is not intended for k-1, because students are not usually ready for this type of partner work. Students work with partners spelling words out loud and writing, so they need to know how to write all of their letters on their own. This is best intended for grades 2-5 Core French as practice and reinforcement/review.
If you teach older French beginners, this is a fun way to practice the alphabet with them, too!
Cards have a mix of French words to practice phonics and sound patterns. Pick the cards that work best for your students' needs. Some included word themes: school supplies, animals, cognates, and everyday words. Also includes 6 cards with accented words for extension if students are ready. I've included a variety of French sound groups such as ouille, th, ain, eil, gn, ou, eur, eu, ch, am, and s/ss. There are no articles used on these cards.
