What educators are saying

This assessment was a perfect match with the 4th grade energy unit for Amplify, and more straightforward / easier to grade than the program assessment. Thank you!
This is the perfect assessment for the end of the unit. It was simple but really showed if they understood what they had learned.

  1. Amplify science unit assessments are great, but how can we better support learning and assess what students really know? This bundle includes all unit assessments that align to the units within Amplify Science for 4th Grade Science, but are designed to provide students with a learning experience as

Description

This unit assessment is aligned to concepts for the Energy Conversion Unit. This assessment is designed to supplement the assessment provided by Amplify Science, however can be implemented without use of the curriculum to assess the conceptual understanding of energy conversion.

The assessment is designed to include a storyline about energy conversion to engage learners in making sense of the phenomena presented. The assessment includes texts and models for students to draw conclusions and answer targeted questions about energy conversion.

The assessment is designed with the 3 Dimensions of NGSS in mind, and highlights the ability for students to do science throughout the assessment. An answer key is provided, along with a clear rubric for a written CER response. Within the answer key, you will see how each question aligned with a science and engineering practice.

The assessment includes 4 questions and 1 CER response. For the CER response, there is a scaffolded writing template included. This template can be given to students requiring additional support in CER writing.

NGSS4-PS3-4
Apply scientific ideas to design, test, and refine a device that converts energy from one form to another. Examples of devices could include electric circuits that convert electrical energy into motion energy of a vehicle, light, or sound; and, a passive solar heater that converts light into heat. Examples of constraints could include the materials, cost, or time to design the device. Devices should be limited to those that convert motion energy to electric energy or use stored energy to cause motion or produce light or sound.
NGSS4-PS3-2
Make observations to provide evidence that energy can be transferred from place to place by sound, light, heat, and electric currents. Assessment does not include quantitative measurements of energy.
