What educators are saying

EXCELLENT RESOURCE!! Out district doesn't have resources (or organized plan of any sort) for newcomers, yet we get them regularly. This packet has been a great tool to help support my students who've needed it over the past few years. Thank you!
This was so helpful for somewhere to begin with a new language learner with very little English skills. It gave me something that she could independently do and helped me with an idea for where to begin my teaching.

Description

Designed for older students, the resources in the ESL Newcomers Pack encompass no/low prep units to help students develop speaking, reading, and writing skills in English. This ESL Curriculum pack is filled with ESL worksheets and ENL activities including ELL vocabulary, pictures, games, and vocabulary acquisition & retention activities to help give your ESL student the confidence they need to continue their English acquisition journey.

Each unit in the pack is designed to provide engaging, independent practice for your newcomer or absolute beginner level upper elementary to adult learner. These carefully sequenced units progress from learning the English alphabet and Emergency phrases to ESL grammar and vocabulary skills. Each unit builds above the previous one to create building blocks of learning.

If you are a teacher of older kids, teens, or adults and are tired of material designed for younger children, this resource is for you.

Updated to include Digital Access Via Google Drive

As an ESL teacher, I know the challenges presented to my content area colleagues when they are faced with a student who doesn’t speak English. Yet, when my colleagues ask for help, I find resources for this age group limited. This is why I decided to develop resources that older students can use independently in their content classes. The resources are intended to provide independent practice for students during their content classes. They are not intended to replace the targeted English Language Instruction provided by a licensed professional (which I hope your school provides.)

If you are a teacher of English Language Learners, you might find it useful to use the anchor charts and activities to introduce new skills and vocabulary or reinforce concepts already taught. You may also like that the activities provide multiple exposure to vocabulary/skills. (I often find that most activities in trade books don’t offer enough exposure to target skills/vocabulary). I also find it useful to have my students keep the study guides handy for reference and use them during classwork time or homework.

Unit one is designed to provide basic foundational skills in letter/sound recognition and writing for students who are unfamiliar with the Western English alphabet. Students will also learn some everyday vocabulary associated with each letter of the alphabet.

Unit two introduces classroom/emergency vocabulary and phrases and provides practice in beginning dialogue.

Unit three continues classroom vocabulary and introduces numbers.

Unit four introduces action verb phrases, colors, and shapes.

Unit five introduces clothing vocabulary and provides written practice in using the present singular and plural form of the verb “to be”.

Unit six introduces food vocabulary. It includes the food pyramid and provides practice in categorizing foods.

A personal dictionary is also included to allow your students to keep track of their learning.
