The two packs in this bundle are designed for students new to the English Language and are designed for your students to be able to work relatively independently. If you’re one of those teachers who cheerfully receive new students in the middle of the school year who don’t speak a word of English and you are currently teaching Catcher in the Rye to your tenth graders, you might want to pick this up. Likewise, if you are an ESL specialist and find that much of the material available does not provide enough exposure to vocabulary and beginner concepts, you will also find this resource helpful. As an ESL teacher, I know the challenges presented to my content area colleagues when they are faced with a student who doesn’t speak English. Yet, when my colleagues ask for help, I find resources for this age group limited. This is why I decided to develop resources that older students can use independently in their content classes. The resources are intended to provide independent practice for students during their content classes. They are not intended to replace the targeted English Language Instruction provided by a licensed professional (which I hope your school provides.)
If you are a teacher of English Language Learners, you might find it useful to use the anchor charts and activities to introduce new skills and vocabulary or reinforce concepts already taught. You may also like that the activities provide multiple exposure to vocabulary/skills. (I often find that most activities in trade books don’t offer enough exposure to target skills/vocabulary). I also find it useful to have my students keep the study guides handy for reference and use them during classwork time or homework.
