Description

In this lab students measure the temperature change during two chemical reactions - one exothermic, and one endothermic.

Students investigate the relationship between heat flow and temperature and complete "fill in the blank" style worksheets as they progress through the lab. The end result is a complete lab report following the scientific method.

This lesson is self-contained and the experiment does not require any additional planning on the teacher's part.

This lab from Roots and Wings Education Services is one of a series of Self-contained labs for intermediate students

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving the four operations with rational numbers.
Use variables to represent quantities in a real-world or mathematical problem, and construct simple equations and inequalities to solve problems by reasoning about the quantities.
Use units as a way to understand problems and to guide the solution of multi-step problems; choose and interpret units consistently in formulas; choose and interpret the scale and the origin in graphs and data displays.
Define appropriate quantities for the purpose of descriptive modeling.
Choose a level of accuracy appropriate to limitations on measurement when reporting quantities.
