Description

This resource contains two different handouts that I use with my students as we learn how to approximate square roots without a calculator.

The first hand-out is the guided notes that I use to introduce this topic to my students. Students will utilize the guided notes to learn how to approximate non-perfect squares. A "template" is included to help to guide student thinking on all the problems that they practice.

The second hand-out is the homework that I give to students. This homework gives students a great opportunity to practice and apply what they have learned.

Use rational approximations of irrational numbers to compare the size of irrational numbers, locate them approximately on a number line diagram, and estimate the value of expressions (e.g., π²). For example, by truncating the decimal expansion of √2, show that √2 is between 1 and 2, then between 1.4 and 1.5, and explain how to continue on to get better approximations.
